3 Simple Ways to Support Your Mental Wellness This Fall

November can feel like a lot.

The days are getting shorter, the holiday season is approaching and the everyday list of things to do does not seem to get any smaller. For many of us, this is when stress starts to quietly build.

As a holistic nutritionalist and mom who loves to focus on health - I like to think about mental wellness as something we support throughout the day, not something we only think about when we are already overwhelmed.

Here are three simple ways I create more space for calm, nourishment and connection.

1. Eat to Support a Steady Foundation

One of the simplest ways to support your mental wellness is to start with the basics: nourishing your body consistently.

When we go too long without eating or rely on quick, sugary foods, our blood sugar can rise and fall quickly. These fluctuations may leave us feeling tired, irritable, distracted or more reactive to everyday stress.

I like to build meals and snacks around a combination of protein, healthy fats, fibre and complex carbohydrates. Think eggs with whole-grain toast, apple slices with nut butter, Greek yogurt with berries or a nourishing soup with lentils and vegetables.

This does not mean you need to follow a perfect meal plan. It simply means giving your body steady nourishment throughout the day so you are not running on empty.

For me, supporting mental wellness often begins with asking: Have I eaten something that will truly support me?

2. Include Probiotic-Rich Foods

Did you know that your gut and brain are constantly communicating?

The gut-brain axis is a two-way communication network between the digestive system and brain, and research continues to explore how our gut microbiome may influence mood, stress and mental wellbeing.

One simple way I support this connection is by including probiotic-rich and fermented foods in my meals.

Think plain yogurt or kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso and other fermented foods that you enjoy.

The research is promising, but it is important to remember that probiotics are not a treatment for anxiety or depression, and results can vary depending on the specific strains and individual. Recent reviews suggest there may be benefits for some aspects of mental health, while more research is still needed.

For me, the takeaway is simple: nourishing your gut is one more way to nourish your whole body.

3. Create Moments of Calm by Pairing Grounding With Self-Care

As a busy mom, I know that finding an extra 20 minutes to meditate can feel completely unrealistic.

Sometimes we need wellness practices that can happen while we are already doing something else. That is why I love pairing grounding with simple moments of self-care.

Try using a Universal Mat while you meditate, sit outside with your morning coffee before the house wakes up or take a few nourishing, slower breaths before you eat.

That last one is one of my favourites.

Taking a moment to pause before a meal can help shift you out of rushing mode and into a more relaxed state, which is supportive of the body's natural digestive process.

You could also step outside while your tea brews, take a few barefoot moments on the grass or pause for three intentional breaths before opening your laptop.

You do not need a perfect practice. Sometimes three intentional breaths are enough to create a little space between everything happening around you and how you choose to respond.

Come Back to the Basics

Mental wellness does not mean eliminating stress from your life. It means creating supportive habits that help you move through stressful seasons with a little more resilience.

Eat to support steady energy. Nourish your gut. Create small moments of calm. Get outside and ground yourself.

And remember, you do not have to do it all at once.

Sometimes taking care of yourself simply means pausing long enough to come back to yourself.
