Nature Prescriptions in Canada: What We've Always Known Is Now Official

PaRx Nature Prescription Canada: Health Benefits of Time Outdoors, Grounding & Earthing

We've been waiting for this.

For years, so many of us have felt it. That quiet knowing that happens when you step outside. You breathe. You slow down. You sit near the trees, or walk barefoot in the grass, and something in your body remembers. Your nervous system settles. Your mind clears.

That feeling was never just in your head.

And now, it's in the prescription pad.

PaRx: Canada's National Nature Prescription Program

What began as a grassroots movement is now celebrated in national health policy and endorsed by the Canadian Medical Association. Through PaRx, over 10,000 registered healthcare prescribers across Canada are officially writing nature into their patients' care — from physicians and physiotherapists to nurses and counsellors.

Something we've always felt is now widely accepted by government and by doctors.

Along with exercise, a healthy diet, and good sleep, many healthcare professionals now recommend time in nature as the fourth pillar of health.

What the Science Actually Says: The Health Benefits of Time in Nature

The research behind PaRx spans hundreds of studies and the findings are hard to ignore.

Sitting in a forest for just 15 minutes significantly reduces cortisol levels and heart rate variability, while sitting on an urban street does nothing. More broadly, spending more time in green space drops your risk of asthma, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke.

And here's one that stopped us: living in a neighbourhood with 10 more trees per block improves your health perception similarly to an increase in personal income of $10,000 per year.

The dose? Smaller than you might think. People who spend at least 2 hours in nature each week report significantly better health and wellbeing and the most efficient drop in cortisol happens between 20 and 30 minutes.

Grounding, Earthing, and Coming Back to the Earth

At Earthing Canada, none of this surprises us. We've believed from the beginning that the body responds to nature, not as a wellness trend, but as a biological truth. Modern life has pulled us indoors, onto screens, away from the rhythms that once regulated our sleep, stress, and recovery.

Whether it's walking barefoot in the backyard, gardening, grounding near the water, or simply stepping outside with intention — these moments matter. Physiologically. Measurably.

Nature is no longer separate from healthcare.

It's becoming part of the prescription. And honestly? We've been waiting for this.
